It worked very well to transfer my files from the hard drives on the Windows desktop to the internal SSDs on the MacBook. I have used it on my old Windows 7 desktop, and now I am using it on a late 2016 15" MacBook Pro. It is downward compatible to previous USB versions. It has a Thunderbolt 3 connection with a manufacturer's claimed transfer rate up to 450MBps via USB 3.0.

I am using a Samsung T 3 2tb portable external SSD. It seems like a lot of responders to this thread don't know that SSD means Solid State Drive, not a spinning disk hard drive. Does anyone have experience with drives in this scenario that they can recommend?

Since I would like to upgrade this year or next year to the newer MacBook Pro I would like to get an external drive that uses both USB 3.0 (for my current MacBook ) and USB-C for my new Mac that I'll get later. I have many videos that I am about to edit and I would like to get an external USB SSD drive. I've run out of space at my primary drive which I use for photos. I have a late model 2013 MacBook Pro with retina.

I'll update the thread on my progress this weekend. I'll be careful and back out if it doesn't work. I bought the upgrade kit, which allows me to create an external drive out of my internal drive. I'm anxious to see if the Time Machine lives up to its name and restores things. I'm pretty comfortable with swapping out the SSD. I built many computers and servers over the years. Also, you might want to check out the waning on the 'compatibility' tab on the OWC page - they report that some boot issues can occur.
